Laparoscopic Surgery
Although laparoscopic surgery has been part of gynecology for 30
years, it has only become a force in general surgery since 1990.
The concept of minimally invasive surgery has invoked many terms that
all mean much the same, i.e., minimal access surgery, keyhole surgery,
laparoscopic surgery, laser surgery.
Laparoscopic procedures are commonly performed for gallbladder
disease, appendicitis, hernia repair, and intestinal disorders, as well
as hiatus hernia and reflux esophagitis.
The benefits include tiny incisions and a rapid recovery with a
shorter hospital stay, although it should be noted that not all patients
might be candidates for this technique, and careful discussion with the
consulting surgeon is important.
