General
Surgery
General surgery means surgical care
of the whole patient, young and old, from the simple removal of a mole,
to the careful evaluation of abdominal pain and to the overall
management of a seriously injured accident victim.
The general surgeon is trained to
make an appropriate assessment of the problem, utilize modern diagnostic
tests, and to recommend proper treatment, which may or may not be
surgical, and may involve referral to another specialist when that is in
the patient’s best interest.
