Colorectal surgery
Colorectal surgery is a major branch of general
surgery that treats diseases of the colon (large intestine), rectum and
anus. This includes the field of proctology and the surgical management
of colitis, diverticulitis and cancers of the large intestine.
A significant aspect of this division of general
surgery is the investigation of intestinal symptoms, such as bleeding
and changes in bowel habits. This includes colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy
and manometry to measure sphincter competence.
Office procedures for hemorrhoids and
other ano-rectal problems, dominate the field of proctology, while
advice on screening and prevention are also important aspects of the
specialty.
